The narrative structure of One thousand and one nights perfectly illustrates the Lacanian aphorism “Only love allows jouissance to condescend to desire”. This article thematizes the clashes between love and jouissance, and also between love and death, as the most significant facets of the inherent conflict between the imaginary and the real in every subject. It is the symbolic which allows for mitigating the devastating effects of that conflict, enabling the reading of One thousand and one nights as a symbolic device akin to the process of analysis.
