Abstract

PETRIBU, Bárbara Gabriel Capecce  and  MATEOS, Martin Antonio Borges Alvarez. Body image and pregnancy. Junguiana [online]. 2017, vol.35, n.1, pp. 33-39. ISSN 0103-0825.

This article reflects on the body image changes of women during pregnancy focusing on some paradoxes of this aspect of gestation. Pregnancy is one of the most important transformational moments in a woman's life. This profoundly mobilizing period brings in itself the contradiction of turning the body into a vessel for a new life and leading it to experience astonishing transformations. Changes in the body image associated to pregnancy are intense for all women, but they can be extremely disturbing for those who have narcissistic wounds reflected in the formation of their body image, mainly by the role of the body in the present society. In these cases, gestation ceases to be an integrative process and becomes a field of symbolic oppositions of a conflicting nature.

Keywords : pregnancy; body image; female.
