Abstract

DOS SANTOS, Acácia Aparecida Angeli  and  FERRAZ, Adriana Satico. Skills assessment related to reading comprehension in elementary school. Psico (Porto Alegre) [online]. 2017, vol.48, n.1, pp. 21-30. ISSN 1980-8623.  http://dx.doi.org/10.15448/1980-8623.2017.1.24376.

This research aimed to investigate the relationship between reading comprehension with the words recognition and phonological awareness, as well as the contribution of both skills to their performance, recognizing its importance to the formal education. The sample was composed by 390 students from Elementary School (3rd to 5th grades), residents in the five Brazilian regions, with 181 boys and 209 girls (M age=9.21, SD=1.065). Three instruments were used to measure the skills. The Cloze tests and EREP were applied collectively and the RACF was applied individually. The results showed correlations between reading comprehension and both skills, especially the higher contribution of words recognition to reading comprehension. There were also performance differences for school grades and students´s residence location. It is important to highlight the initiative of this research to evaluate the performance of students in early school grades, in the size of five Brazilian regions.
