The objective of this study was to assess cognitive performance, impulsivity, and suicidal ideation in 82 (M=31.80; SD=0.96) inpatients of a psychiatric clinic in Porto Alegre, RS. Patients were divided into two groups without (G1=33) and with a history of suicide attempt (G2=49). We administered the following instruments: the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS III), the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS), the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation (BSI), the FAST Scale, and a questionnaire on sociodemographic data. The results showed no significant differences between the two groups with respect to total IQ and executive functions specifically. The levels of impulsivity, as well as suicidal ideation, were higher in patients with a history of suicide attempts, especially in patients younger than 30 years. Considering the comorbidities, we found that chemical dependency showed the highest prevalence, followed by bipolar disorder and depression. The results demonstrated that the similarities between the groups of patients with and without a history of suicide attempt constitute a warning and a challenge. Evidences toward impulsivity confirm previous studies, as well as what refers to comorbidities identified.
