Anorexia is a symptom that puts into play the particularities of the subject in relation to alimentation, confirming that this is not simply an act of ingesting nutrients to satisfy a biological need and ensure the survival of the organism, but which has an erotic function for subject by implying a direction to the Other. The subject deals not with an instinctual satisfaction, linked to the needs, but with a requirement that is a drive satisfaction. The establishment of a drive body is only possible via the Other and involves not only the way the latter invests libidinally the child’s body, but as the subject in question stands before this investment. The anorexic, through the special relationship it has with the food, the refusal of it, shows that there is a strong link with the Other, because their desire is inexorably connected to him and the object that it can offer, while the anorexic also demonstrates a movement toward a breaking of ties with the Other, whose recent death consequences. In this article, we propose to articulate the ways in which the subject in hysterical anorexia is positioned towards the Other from the drive functioning.
