The history of psychiatry is characterized by a constant nosological evolution, derived from sociocultural transformations peculiar to each society and epoch. The present study analyzes the transition from the group of childhood psychoses to the group of autistic spectrum disorders over the years. We propose to look into the sociocultural foundations that led to this change, emphasizing the study of three nosological classifications: American, French and international. The disappearance of childhood psychosis and the rise of autistic spectrum disorders undeniably reflect the hegemony with which American sociocultural ideals prevail in the field of Western psychiatry to the detriment of the ideological references that influence the perception of children's mental illness in other cultures. The current tendency to expand and standardize the concept of autism worldwide follows an economic conformity and compromises the possibility of coexistence among diverse sociocultural references in the psychiatric context.
