Abstract

ASSIS, Natália Del Ponte de; VISINTIN, Carlos Del Negro; BORGES, Andrea de Arruda Botelho  and  AIELLO-VAISBERG, Tânia Maria José. Woman, mother and daughter caregiver: collective imaginary about intergenerational relations. Psicol. clin. [online]. 2020, vol.32, n.2, pp. 213-230. ISSN 0103-5665.  http://dx.doi.org/10.33208/PC1980-5438v0032n02A01.

In the context of scientific studies which consider the increasingly prevalent possibility of coexistence of different generations, in various social and institutional spheres, this study aims to investigate collective imaginaries about intergenerational relationships. It is organized around the application of the psychoanalytic method to a short film available online. The researchers' exposure to this material, in a state of floating attention and free association, led to the development of three fields of affective-emotional meaning: "Meaning for living", "It is all on me", and "Wife/mother/daughter caregiver". These fields indicate the prevalence of imaginative beliefs according to which the coexistence between grandparents and grandchildren would be playful and promote meaningful learning, provided an adult took care of the family. The general picture indicates that healthy relationships between children and the elderly requires support in terms of supplying their affective and material needs, which tends to be a responsibility assigned to women (wives, mothers and daughters), who usually are in charge of financial support, domestic chores, and family care.

Keywords : elderly people; women; intergenerational relations; collective imaginary; psychoanalysis.
