Daniel Paul Schreber's autobiography, Memoirs of My Nervous Illness, published in 1903, gives Freud further insights into his study of paranoia, resulting in the publication in 1911 of the Psychoanalytic notes on an autobiographical account of a case of paranoia (dementia paranoides), a crucial work for the psychoanalytical treatment of psychosis. Based on this production, Lacan elaborates fundamental concepts for a possible psychosis clinical work. By means of a reading of Schreber's memoirs entwined with Freud's commentary on them, and in dialogue with some of Lacan's propositions about the psychosis clinical practice, we suggest that Schreber's work testifies to the power of writing as a device in the organization of psychotic delusions. In this sense, we hold the hypothesis that Schreber, the writer (Schreiber, in German) is also Schreber, the precursor.
