Abstract

CHERER, Evandro de Quadros; FERRARI, Andrea Gabriela  and  PICCININI, Cesar Augusto. The identification processes in the constitution of fatherhood. Psicol. clin. [online]. 2021, vol.33, n.1, pp. 35-55. ISSN 0103-5665.  http://dx.doi.org/10.33208/PC1980-5438v0033n01A02.

Fatherhood cannot be limited to childbirth, but is also related to the paternal subjective history, especially as regards the identification processes with parental figures. This study investigated the constitution of fatherhood through the father's identification processes. This study centered on a primiparous father who was interviewed on the child's 6th and 25th months. His responses showed that, in an attempt to be an ideal father, this man tried to avoid being like his own father. However, due to his own formative history, he built his fatherhood his own way, according to the identifications with his particular parental figures. These findings support the idea that childhood experiences leave indelible marks on the human psyche and can be reactivated by the experience of fatherhood.

Keywords : identification; fatherhood; psychoanalysis.
