In this article, the authors address the issue of empathy in the psychoanalytic clinic, guided methodologically by the articulations between the aesthetics of reception and psychoanalysis, in order to read the film "Praça Paris", by Lucia Murat, as a clinical case. In this cinematographic work, which deals with a situation of psychological care conducted by an intern at a school clinic, the theme of identities is presented as an important element in social discourse, which in turn, may lead to misuses of empathy. Based on Sándor Ferenczi's considerations, we will articulate a questioning of the place of identification and discuss its connections with the unfamiliar, as presented by Sigmund Freud, with the aim of expressing what we consider to be the Ferenczian posture regarding the use of empathy in the clinic. We will underline how upholding the desire to be empathic during a session must be articulated with the analyst's modality of judgment: considering why one is doing what one is doing and up to what point it should be done. As this reading of the film points out, the human characteristic of identification can both imprison and confuse, as well as serve as a differentiating estrangement, a point that we consider related to the proposal.
