Listening in psychoanalysis is supported by some fundamental concepts of clinical operation stemming from the handling of transference. Two of these concepts are abstinence and neutrality, which still sometimes lead to misunderstandings and confusions. In this work, a theoretical course is followed with the aim of resuming the origins of such conceptualizations, discussing the ways they have been used and the importance of an involved psychoanalysis, both through the clinic and through the culture. Two ideas are upheld: that abstinence does not correspond to a passive posture, and that neutrality does not correlate to a stance of exemption or not implication on the part of the psychoanalyst. Thus, the repercussion of such concepts in analytical practice can be guided by a sensitive clinic and by listening attentively to the vicissitudes of the political and social aspects in contemporary sufferings and symptomatic manifestations. This is because, in addition to subsidies for thinking about clinical practice, abstinence and neutrality are also configured as political concepts, stressing how important it is for the psychoanalyst to mind countertransference movements that may, perhaps, reverberate in the interventions performed.
