What are the necessary conditions for the arising of women’s desire to be a mother? According to Freud’s theory on women’s sexuality such desire is a kind of symptom that replaces the unbearable envy of the pennis. This kind of pathologizing theory relates femininity to hysterical neurosis. It considers feminine eroticism as necessarily related to the desire of giving birth to a child. In this context, motherhood is linked to a pholocentric logic which emphasizes the idea of the lack of pennis. Is there a desire of giving birth to a child that is not related to the restauration of the wounded narcisism of the child? Hence, the author relates motherhood to an inner self knowledge and experience of loss - to an experience that is closer to loosing children than to having them; closer to separation than to bonding.
