This text discusses the use of theory in the process of interpretation according to Fabio Herrmann’s Multiple Fields Theory. In brief, theory enters in the interpretative process, after a period of a-theoretical listening, in which the analyst awaits for an interpreter, that is, a term that detaches itself from the transference context that the analyst attempts to disrupt. It may be any kind of slip. This term will then create a space in which a theory about this patient bearing the mark of singularity can develop. Its appearance and employment by the analyst points out to a second round in which interpretation will be theoretically oriented: a theory that submits itself to the conditions of transformation - complementation or reversal - by the patient’s response. The fundamental quality of interpretation is that of provoking a field rupture, breaking the prevalent meaning instead of giving sense. From the shaking that follows the rupture, a crucial moment in the process of interpretation, emerges the “response” which is most interesting for the analyst in the construction of his theoretical hypothesis about the patient. With the Multiple Fields Theory we are in a domain of a psychoanalytical hermeneutics, where representations from the instinctual level emerge with the strength of truth. It is not, however, a quest for a fundamental significant, an unconscious phantasy that is the foundation of the subject, etc., but rather of favoring a multiplicity of identifications made possible by desire in each patient. It is not a matter of looking for a real or an ultimate reality. The interpretation searches for a fluidity of phantasies, attempts to favor new arrangements in affective life, the emergence of new fields of meaning, new forms of life made possible by the tapestry of the unconscious desire. For this purpose, theory is essential in as much as we interpret “from somewhere”. However if we take theory strictly as such, we will be in the opposite direction of our goal; we could break the field of conventional discourse, of everyday sense, but at the price of exploring only one direction, only a portion of the patient’s psyche. The teachings that Fabio Herrmann gave us insert psychoanalytical interpretation in today’s thinking, which aims at a more radical non alienation of man. They inscribe psychoanalysis in a real psychoanalytical hermeneutics.
