Abstract

FRANCO FILHO, Odilon de Mello. The psychoanalyst’s main instrument of work. J. psicanal. [online]. 2008, vol.41, n.74, pp. 249-256. ISSN 0103-5835.

In this paper, presented to the new members of the Institute of Psychoanalysis of the Sociedade Brasileira de Psicanálise de São Paulo as the magna class of the 2008, the author offers the idea that the psychoanalyst’s main instrument of work is his/her personality. This “instrument” is based on the analyst’s sensibility, i.e. his/her availability to contact with the patient, and his/her capacity to tolerate the unknown. In this perspective, the analysis of the psychoanalyst is the central element of the analytical training. Besides participating in the seminars and supervisions, it is especially important that the candidate integrates into the network that is part of the institutional life. This interaction and involvement relates to two emotional dispositions: passion (in Bion’s sense) and love of truth. This means an ethical commitment for those who intend to get acquainted with the psychoanalytic method.

Keywords : Personality of the analyst; Analysis of the psychoanalyst; Psychoanalytic method.
