Abstract

FOSTER, Marta. Free association of ideas: “Via Regia” to the unconscious - the specificity of the method. J. psicanal. [online]. 2010, vol.43, n.79, pp. 201-216. ISSN 0103-5835.

In previous studies (Foster 2001, 2004, 2005, 2008) I approached the investigating the associative process as a technical/theoretical resource in psychoanalytic clinical treatment. Within the associative process I emphasized the moment of the analytical encounter and the fact that the “emotional storm” (Bion,1970), which happens at this time, facilitates the demonstration of the patient’s primitive aspects. In this paper, I intend to continue these previous researches, highlighting the importance of early communication through the patient (verbal, preverbal, nonverbal) and its use in analytical work. This procedure has been proven to facilitate the approach of mental phenomena that are present in the consulting room, which is why I became interested in investigating it and presenting it to colleagues for discussion. For this purpose, I research the concept of “emotional experience” and “language” and mention clinical situations to demonstrate my proposal.

Keywords : Preverbal communication; Nonverbal communication; Language; Analytic encounter; Emotional experience.
