Abstract

ALTMAN, Miriam. Ageing in the light of psychoanalysis. J. psicanal. [online]. 2011, vol.44, n.80, pp. 193-206. ISSN 0103-5835.

The elderly population has increased significantly. This fact raises greater concern and attention to the characteristics and particular demands of this age group who is over sixty-five years. We aim to present some psychoanalytic concepts and correlate them with clinical experience presenting vignettes to illustrate the topics linked to the losses experienced in this age group. From this point of view we emphasize the relationship between ageing and the psychological and sociocultural factors related to this phase of life. We observed that personality characteristics influence the improvement or not in psychotherapy or psychoanalysis and are more important than the person chronological age.

Keywords : Ageing; Losses; Psychotherapy; Psychoanalysis.
