Abstract

JUNQUEIRA FILHO, Luiz Carlos Uchôa. The “repulsive, sometimes hateful magnificence” of Dante’s Hell. J. psicanal. [online]. 2011, vol.44, n.81, pp.245-252. ISSN 0103-5835.

This article intends to orient the reader about the nature of Dante’s Hell. Firstly, “hell’s” conception is outlined in greek-latin tradition. Afterwards, some sources in which Dante possibly inspired himself to build his Hell, are looked for: in Goethe’s words, the result held a “repulsive, sometimes hateful magnificence”. At last, four examples are shown to illustrate his poetic creativity.

Keywords : Hell; Dante; Unchangeable existence; Spectral bodies.
