In 1930 Freud received the prestigious Goethe Prize from the city of Frankfurt, which gave him great joy, since he hadn’t got any official homage until that date. I start this work explaining the meaning of this prize, often mistaken as a literary one. After I demystify this misunderstanding, I talk briefly about the historical awarding of this prize, in which the singular role of Goethe in the German culture becomes evident. Next, I write about Freud’s award and its offstage. The psychoanalyst Thomas Plänkers, who examined the meeting minutes of the prize curators, revealed that heated discussions preceded Freud’s nomination. This controversy is reflected in the slight advantage of votes, with which he was chosen: 7 to 5. I conclude this text reproducing Plänk’s interesting reflection about this controversy over Freud, having as backdrop the rise of national-socialism in Germany.
