This paper is a discussion of a case handled by me as a legal psychologist in a child custody case. Using André Green’s article The Dead Mother and Pierre Fédida’s The Melancholy Cannibal, I analyze the peculiarities of maternal identification present in the case of a woman that, living in a psychic framework marked by mental states of emptiness, cannot be a mother to her children.
