Many Freud's texts translated directly from German to Portuguese by renowned translators are nowadays available. However a significant number of readers still use the Brazilian Standard Edition as a reference. The author of this article emphasizes the unique role of the English Standard Edition in spreading Psychoanalysis, and the pioneer work of the psychoanalyst and translator Marilene Carone. The author also makes some reflections about why the new translations are being so slowly assimilated.
