The authors write a retrospective overview of an important aspect of the history of Psychoanalysis, that is, the concern with psychoanalytic assistance to wider levels of society. This concern could be found in Freud's pronouncement at the Fifth International Psychoanalytic Congress, in Budapest, in 1918, in which this theme became official inside the psychoanalytic institutions. Auspicious winds blew and brought this news to Durval Marcondes. In a few years, the SBPSP developed practices to spread the new science. In 2002, the International Psychoanalytic Association, which was mobilized by the demands of contemporary society, stimulated the expansion of psychoanalytic activities beyond the traditional setting. It was at that time the extramural (or "outreach") movement of Psychoanalysis was born. During the 2012-2016 administration of the SBPSP, the Community Service Directory team received a full support in order to expand projects and develop practices for including psychoanalytic activities in the social space. The authors emphasize that the implementation of those projects followed the concept of "social responsibility".
