QUEIROGA, Cíntia Silva; BARONE, Leda Maria Codeço  e  COSTA, Beethoven Hortencio Rodrigues da. A brief thought on the formation of masses on social networking websites and the search for a new ego-ideal. J. psicanal. [online]. 2016, vol.49, n.91, pp. 111-126. ISSN 0103-5835.

The purpose of the following paper is to briefly analyze groups that are formed on social networking websites, especially Facebook. This study is based on the structure of posts made by individuals who show similar characteristics to those described by Freud in "Mass Psychology and The Analysis of the Ego". In this paper, the author shows a new perspective on Freud's writing and adds some ideas from other authors' works. Freud explains the formation of masses as a "relief valve" through which subjects can experience their desires by replacing their ego ideal with the chosen object and expressing hostility to those who are not part of the mass. After investigating features of the primal horde in which the father represented the repressive force that enabled the rise of civilization, the author could relate those events to online social networking groups. In other words, these social networking groups expose a weakening image of the father of the horde nowadays and a search for a new ego ideal.
