In a "Preliminary Note" to his book "Message", the only one published in life, Fernando Pessoa enumerates the five qualities he deems necessary for the interpreter who intends to understand the symbols, "without which symbols will be dead to him, and he's dead to them". The qualities cited - 1. Sympathy, 2. Intuition, 3. Intelligence, 4. Comprehension and 5. Grace - inspire and are used by the author as an introduction to the discussion of some elements considered important for the formation of the psychoanalyst.
