Abstract

ALVES, Lucas de Oliveira  and  MARSILLAC, Ana Lúcia Mandelli de. The utopias of Ai Weiwei: object a, art and politics. J. psicanal. [online]. 2022, vol.55, n.102, pp. 183-199. ISSN 0103-5835.

This article analyzes some works by contemporary artist Ai Weiwei, establishing links between the lacanian concept of object a, utopia and contemporary art. Some aspects of these concepts are presented and related to the artist's works concerning the current refugee crisis, unfolding in analyzes and discussions of subjective and political issues touched by them. The works, in the links they promote between artist and audience, as well as between different times and contexts, raise criticisms of injustices that are repeated in history, signalling possibilities of change in the ways of relating to others. The political character of the creations, similar to utopia and object a, is not fixed in ideal images, but operates in the opening of meanings, images and, therefore, realities.

Keywords : psychoanalysis; utopia; object a; art; politics.
