Abstract

KUSNER, Rosa Lise de Sousa; JOU, Graciela Inchausti de; THIERS, Valéria Oliveira  and  SILVA, Brasílio Ricardo Cirillo da. Orthographic writing: analysis of the orthographic performance of undergraduates. Rev. psicopedag. [online]. 2006, vol.23, n.71, pp. 100-106. ISSN 0103-8486.

This study examined the use of orthographic knowledge by 88 undergraduate students (at the 2nd year) from a private university with mean age of 24 years. The students were orally presented 36 isolated words and were asked to write these words. The results showed that 75% of the students made orthographic errors while 25% did not do any mistake. The error's analysis revealed that there were more contextual errors than arbitrary ones. The results supported the suggestion that 12 years of formal instruction does not guarantee that students learn to write using orthographic norms. It concludes that an explicit teaching of orthographic rules must be reconsidered.
