This article aims to present and discuss some of the causes that had as an effect the pedagogy produced nowadays, the origin of ideas that led to the development of the self-government and of the group work dates back to the 19th century, methods which are based on the New School Movement that emerged in the 20th century have given its actual instrumental characteristic to the reflection on the child and the school. The authors use the literature from that time and contemporary essays to show that the studies on the pedagogical area cannot dispense with the explanations about the theories and school practices from the past, this is a necessary condition to understand what is being carried out in the present.
