FUSCO, Natália  e  CAPELLINI, Simone Aparecida. Comparison of the Knowledge level of Brazilian Portuguese rules between students from 1st to 5th grades of the fundamental education. Rev. psicopedag. [online]. 2009, vol.26, n.80, pp. 220-230. ISSN 0103-8486.

AIM: This study aims to elaborate a reading evaluation test and to compare the knowledge level of the students from 1st to 5th of fundamental education about the use of Brazilian Portuguese rules. METHOD: 150 students divided in 5 groups of 30 students by grade, in the age range from 6 to 10 years and 11 months, of both genders, from 1st to 5th grades of a municipal school, distributed in GI to GV. The students were submitted to a Reading Evaluation Test composed by 6 subtests: Regular Word subtest (RW), Irregular Word subtest (IW), Incorrect Regular Words with Visual substitutions subtest (VW), Incorrect Regular words with phonological substitutions subtest (WP), Homophones Incorrect word subtest (WH) and Non-words subtest (NW). RESULTS: The results revealed statistically significant difference between obtained and expected score in all subtests, showing that students from 1st to 5th grades did not obtain the maximum correct points in reading subtests; the students of GI and GII showed inferior performance in reading in all subtests in relation to GIII, GIV and GV. About the reading time, the higher the grade was, the shorter the reading time also was. CONCLUSION: We conclude that the reading evaluation test elaborated in this study enabled to know the knowledge level of students from 1st to 5th grades of fundamental education about the use of Brazilian Portuguese rules; however, new research needs to be realized to verify if these results here presented depict the reading behavior of the students from public schools.
