INTRODUCTION: The true custodians of the culture of oral transmission of child, play and games have attracted the interest of many researchers in Brazil and around the world. Thus, the goal of this study is to investigate the actual situation of the practice of play and games in different cities in the state of Espirito Santo. METHODS: Were carried out 205 observations of play activities of children between seven to 12 years old, 105 in districts of the state and 100 in the capital. In addition, some of these same children answered a survey about play preferences and practices, making a total of 20 interviews in the capital and 31 in the districts. Participants were interviewed and observed while playing in places such as streets, schools, public squares, parks, beaches and homes. Toys and games were photographed in order to record them. RESULTS: The games / plays more observed both in the capital and the interior were soccer. Of all participants of the interviews, 27 were boys and 24, girls. Football appears as favorite recreational activity of 66.7% of boys, while the doll was mentioned by 25% of girls. Pike was preferred as a game of both genders. CONCLUSION: There was a very frequent coexistence between traditional play and games and various recreational activities that involve the use of new technologies such as computers, which seems to help to demystify the prevailing idea that children today do not practice more traditional games as some decades before.
