INTRODUCTION: The present work analyzes, through longitudinal research, the literal production of 4th grade children of elementary school of a public school in Rolandia city. OBJECTIVE: The objective to evaluate the learning skill of written language in the school and to reflect on the role of the mediating teacher in this process. METHODS: It was analyzed the first texts of the school year with the purpose to verify the level on the writing skill of the students. It was part of a request from the City Board of education to the teachers at the public school. The analysis of the texts continued during April, May until June, to verify if it had changes in the writing skill of the children through the mediation of the teacher. CONCLUSION: The research allowed to conclude that almost haven't mediation of teacher in the work of writing of texts in the classroom. To obtain a qualitative improvement in the literal production, it is necessary to make changes in the conception of teaching in the written language.
