Abstract

CUNHA, Vera Lúcia Orlandi  and  CAPELLINI, Simone Aparecida. Metalinguistic skills in the literacy process of children with learning disorders. Rev. psicopedag. [online]. 2011, vol.28, n.85, pp. 85-96. ISSN 0103-8486.

The purpose of literacy is to help children understand what they read and develop strategies to continue to read independently. Learning to read requires an understanding of the alphabetic principle to use rules of grapheme-phoneme correspondence to decode information. However, some children have serious difficulties in learning these skills, which become obstacles to the assimilation of content areas. The main characteristic of this type of difficulty is the low yield or performance in activities such as reading, writing or math compared with what might be expected child, according to their intelligence and opportunities. Based on the foregoing, this study intends to reflect on the literacy of students who have learning disorders and the development of metalinguistic skills involved in the acquisition of reading and writing. For this, it is important to consider some aspects of oral language and writing and about reading development, as well as the skills considered essential in this process. Moreover, it is essential that be explained the classification of learning disorders and the definition of each one so that the reflection proposed by this study can bring about the comprehension that the difficulties presented by these students can be based on changes in the development of these skills. As the metalinguistic abilities are presents in learning disabilities it is necessary that these skills are developed so as to ensure successful learning of reading and writing.
