Abstract

OBJECTIVES: To analyze how mothers of children with low vision understand the process of visual stimulation of their children and their path to the service of therapeutic intervention. METHODS: This study is characterized as a qualitative research. Eleven mothers of children with low vision, whose children were assisted by the Visual Stimulation Service from the Ophthalmology Sector from Hospital das Clínicas of Unicamp, were interviewed. For data collection semi-structured interviews were used. The main topics of the interview were: the mothers' understanding about the referral to visual stimulation, the path and conditions to attend the services of visual stimulation and the importance of visual stimulation. RESULTS: Some mothers said that they did not remember, did not know or they even said that they were not informed of the reason they were referred to the visual stimulation service. The mothers gradually come to understand their children's condition as they get in contact with the professionals that are interfering in the visual stimulation process of their children. The path to reach the service varies according to financial and transport conditions. Most of the mothers considers the small progresses and seems to understand that the learning of their children is gradual and they find it important to give continuity to stimulation at home. CONCLUSION: The mothers' understanding about the importance of visual stimulation to the development of the children with low visual was gradually built as they were guided by professionals from the visual stimulation service and as they noticed progresses in the development of their children.
