MECCA, Tatiana Pontrelli; ANTONIO, Daniela Aguilera Moura  e  MACEDO, Elizeu Coutinho de. Intelligence development in preschoolers: implications for learning. Rev. psicopedag. [online]. 2012, vol.29, n.88, pp. 66-73. ISSN 0103-8486.

The cognitive abilities developed in preschool age are critical to acquiring knowledge in the following years. In the cognitive assessment of preschool children it is possible to recognize delays in the development and establish different profiles of competence concerning various cognitive functions. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to present a review of the main aspects and challenges of specific cognitive assessment in preschool children, as well as it can assist in the establishment of early and effective interventions. The focus of the study is the intelligence, a construct that is directly related to the ability to reasoning and problem solving. Studies indicate that intelligence is influenced by genetic and environmental features, and has a consistent relationship with learning. Thus, it is of paramount importance to understand how to present intellectual functioning in preschool, and evaluate it properly, assist in planning intervention strategies for psychopedagogy, and an indication of specific treatments.
