OBJECTIVE: To survey and characterize national periodicals on intellectual disability in the last twelve years in SciELO base. METHODS: We surveyed some descriptors that have been historically used to refer to the theme, such as "mental retardation," "mentally retarded", among others, and the term used today, "intellectual disability". Sixty-four articles were analyzed. RESULTS: In general, it was found that: many recent studies are still using retrograde terms to refer to the subject; there was a significant increase in production over the last five years compared to the beginning of the last decade; the subject searched more frequently referred to conceptualization, social inclusion and representation; found few studies on the assessment, etiology and epidemiology of intellectual disability. CONCLUSION: It is emphasized that the research conducted here involved only the SciELO database, which despite its national representation, yet is just a sample of what is being produced on the intellectual disability. Although publications have been raised against needs more commonly related to the frame, there was a need for other investigations.
