In this study, we aimed to highlight the importance of children's literature and its contribution to learning and child development in a pedagogical and psycho-pedagogical perspective, and also a reflection on humanizing educational practices. Thus, we performed a literature search on children's literature grounded in historical-cultural theory, showing its importance and contribution to the learning and development of children. This research highlights the work that can be developed with the exponents of children's literature. We emphasize the historical-cultural theory and children's literature, punctuating some elements that constitute its importance and contribution to the learning and development of children from Early Childhood and Elementary Education. Emphasize one using psychoeducational attention as a resource elements that constitute children's literature as tales of history, music, poetry and poems. The analysis indicates a misunderstanding of the components of children's literature, reducing it only tales of history and hence limiting the learning and development of children with the possibilities of human formation and also the importance of initial teacher training and breeding of this culture.
