CARCERES, Patricia Cristina Pinto  e  COVRE, Priscila. Impact of early and late diagnosis of dyslexia - understanding this learning disorder. Rev. psicopedag. [online]. 2018, vol.35, n.108, pp. 296-305. ISSN 0103-8486.

Dyslexia is a learning disability that manifests itself in childhood and persists throughout the lifespan. In general, the diagnosis is made in the early academic years, however, many individuals with dyslexia symptoms do not receive a diagnosis or are diagnosed only in adult life. The aim of the present study was to compare the impact of dyslexia on the life of individuals who were diagnosed at different moments in their lifespan, in childhood or in adult life. Six participants, divided into two groups according to the time of diagnosis, answered a structured interview regarding the way they were affected by dyslexia and its diagnosis. Participants in both groups mentioned reading difficulties, low self-esteem, and a sense of relief after being diagnosed due to the fact that they could understand better their difficulties. Participants diagnosed in adulthood have had the greatest impact of dyslexia in their academic lives, with repetitions and interruption of studies. While the participants diagnosed in childhood mentioned that the relationship with the school changed after receiving the diagnosis, which provided the necessary supports during academic tests. The results of this study allowed a reflection on the importance of early diagnosis for dyslexia, which directs interventions and the implementation of appropriate strategies, supports and resources.
