MACEDO, Rosa M. S. de; KUBLIKOWSKI, Ida  e  BERTHOUD, Cristiana M. E.. Positive values and adolescent development: a parents' perspective. Rev. bras. crescimento desenvolv. hum. [online]. 2006, vol.16, n.2, pp. 38-52. ISSN 0104-1282.

This research is part of the project "Positive values and adolescent development" and was designed to analyze if the values that parents consider important to teach to their children are consonant to those investigated through the questionnaire "Profiles of Student Life: Attitudes and Behaviors". It was investigated what the parents considered important to transmit, what strategies they used and the expected and perceived results. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with mothers and fathers living in the city of São Paulo, categorized according to their social and economic backgrounds. The analysis showed that the values that those parents aimed to teach to their children were in agreement with those investigated by the questionnaire. Using parental styles classified as democratic and/ or authoritarian, the parents felt that they had succeeded in educating their children, and this opinion was reflected on the positive image they offered of them. Nevertheless, the results pointed out that the participation of the community is necessary in the process of planning strategies to promote positive values for adolescents, independently of their economic background.
