OBJECTIVE: to present an experience report on playful activities development in a Basic Health Unit (BHU) waiting room. METHOD: in an UBS without a previous story on Speech Language and Hearing Pathologist (SLP) performance. From the beginning of the activities, a new service group has joined the BHU, and the proposal has ended up being developed by another group (SACA - child and adolescent care service), which has presented, among others, a similar proposal. Besides, the trainees involved in such a proposal have searched for talking to mothers and pregnant women about child's development, and counseling to keep child's health. The initial approach has been done making use of games and manufactured toys, such as: plug-in blocks; story books; dolls; toy cars of several colors and sizes, besides rattles and other more specific materials for children aged less than one-year-old. RESULTS: physicians have said that the participant children use to come to the consultations in a livelier mood. Moreover, it has been observed that most children, who have participated in the day they have had medical care, have come back another date only to participate in the Toy Place activities. Parents and responsible for the children, who have received orientations, have told later on about the contribution of this work for their children development. CONCLUSION: creating educational and preventive spaces and moments in the health field can contribute to improve the quality of the services, and, as a consequence, to a better attention to children and adolescents that come to this place. Thus, promoting an education on health, and focusing on the best indicated treatment for each case, when necessary.
