Abstract

The author presents the use of spontaneous theatre as a device of qualitative methodology in a research exploring how young public school pupils of a Youth and Adult Education programme in Belo Horizonte experienced school. The paper presents the involvement and participation of youngsters in spontaneous theatre workshops and the show they put on following these workshops. Spontaneous theatre is described as a sociopsychodramatic method, which is based on the principles of qualitative and participative research. The author arrives to the following conclusions: spontaneous theatre has proved to be an effective investigative and educational instrument for youngsters; it qualitatively complemented data obtained through other procedures, especially with regards to the interactive axis of participative research; and, it was perceived by youngsters as being an important aspect of their school experience and subjectivity.
