Abstract

DORICCI, Giovanna Cabral; CROVADOR, Laura Ferreira  and  MARTINS, Pedro Pablo Sampaio. The relational expert in family therapy oriented by a social constructionist epistemology. Nova perspect. sist. [online]. 2017, vol.26, n.59, pp. 37-51. ISSN 0104-7841.

This article describes some reflections and questions about the not-knowing stance in collaborative therapy. Is this stance always useful? Should therapists’ previous knowledge of necessarily be silenced in order for a collaborative relationship to be obtained? These questions, as well as others, are reflected on, and theoretically sustained throughout the article. We seek to describe different meanings related to the not-knowing stance, and to reflect on their implications for the practice of family therapy. By means of a theoretical analysis of the concept, we conclude that the stance of a relational expert is a possibility in face of social constructionist epistemology. Additionally, we describe how this stance can work for the maintenance of the responsivity and collaboration between therapist and client. We hope that this article is a contribution for the start of a dialogue in the field, where traditional expertise (i.e., therapists’ particular specialized knowledge) is regarded as potentially useful, depending on how they are used in the practice of family therapy.
