Abstract

MARTINS, Pedro Pablo Sampaio; MANFRIM, Ana Flávia Nascimento  and  DORICCI, Giovanna Cabral. Values talk: creating meanings, significances and paths in clinical practice. Nova perspect. sist. [online]. 2021, vol.30, n.69, pp. 17-33. ISSN 0104-7841.  http://dx.doi.org/10.38034/nps.v30i69.584.

This article describes "values talk", a therapeutic resource derived from a social constructionist epistemology. It aims to help the client to name important values for themselves, from the joint analysis and meaning making about events in their lives, and to create possibilities for these values to be more present and well taken care of in clients' actions and daily decisions. We describe the experiences that have inspired the construction of this resource, its theoretical foundations, the steps that make the practice, and its main effects. These effects are: the construction of a sense of orientation in face of the problem; the possibility of walking alongside the client in a visual way in regards to what is important to them; and the reflection about who we become as we orient our decisions from the standpoint of what we deem important. A clinical case is presented in order to illustrate the use of the resource.

Keywords : Therapy; Clinical practice; Social constructionism; Meaning making.
