RIVEROS, Angélica; CEBALLOS, Gabriela; LAGUNA, Ricardo  e  SANCHES-SOSA, Juan José. Psychological management of essential hypertension: effects of a cognitive-behavioral intervention. Rev. Latinoam. Psicol. [online]. 2005, vol.37, n.3, pp. 493-507. ISSN 0120-0534.

In order to examine the effects of a cognitive-behavioral intervention on quality of life, therapeutic adherence and well-being of hypertensive patients, two related studies were conducted. The first study explored the psychometric properties of a health-related quality of life scale in 118 patients. All participants were diagnosed with at least one of several chronic diseases which have shown high incidence in Mexico. The second study involved a clinical trial with twenty patients diagnosed with essential hypertension. Results revealed clinical and statistically significant changes for most patients on quality of life, therapeutic adherence, wellbeing and anxiety in pre-posttest and follow up measurements. These findings are discussed in terms of the prevalent conditions in public health systems of such developing nations as those in Latin America.
