Basing on the observation of the persistent difficulty in the clinical and theoretical discussion regarding the idea of splitting (Spaltung), which is here also attributed to imprecision noticed in the translations (German, English and Portuguese), the author attempts to trace briefly the origins and the development of the concept of splitting in Freud, Klein and Bion, trying to highlight the continuity and discontinuity of this concept in the work of these authors in the light of commentaries on some translations.
