The author, invited to participate in a roundtable discussion entitled Violations of the Setting, returns to the original concept of this term in psychoanalysis, in order to then dissect it into its different dimensions: the formal aspects related to the external conditions whereby psychoanalysis occurs; the aspects related to the psyche of the psychoanalyst who has incorporated the analytic method unto himself. Due to the special attention given to this second dimension, aspects related to the currency of clinical practice are highlighted, along with its relation with the analytic method. The idea of violation is examined through the consideration of some fragments of daily analytic practice.
