These notes provide an account of the ten years of work of the Working Party on Theoretical Issues of the European Psychoanalytical Federation. They describe the research projects that have been initiated, beginning with the theme of the implicit, preconscious, private theories of the analyst in clinical practice, and ending with the on-going project on the implicit theories on trauma as analyzed in texts and especially in interviews with seven experts on trauma. I explain the methodology applied and the significance that, in our opinion, this type of work acquires in contemporary psychoanalysis. It serves to bring together analysts from different regions, languages and cultures in order to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and respect for differences.
