Abstract

PAIM FILHO, Ignácio Alves. Repetition compulsion: death instinct "trans-in-vested" with libido. Rev. bras. psicanál [online]. 2010, vol.44, n.3, pp. 117-126. ISSN 0486-641X.

The author has as his objective, in this paper, the rethinking of repetition compulsion. He takes as a starting point the following question: Repetition compulsion: death instinct or attempt at symbolization? In face of this inquiry, he attempts to rectify that which he considers a misconception, in terms of proposing that in the process of repetition "com+pulsion" ("com" meaning "with", in Portuguese), death instinct and sexual pulsion (drive) are implied. The author proposes that what determines the destiny in repetition compulsion is the inefficiency of the sexual instinct in domesticating the death instinct. Following the path proposed by Freud, he understands that repetition compulsion presents a dichotomy, causing the emergence of two groups: a compulsion driven by the pleasure principle and another driven by beyond the pleasure principle. As a result of this process, he comprehends that the death instinct and its clinical manifestations, through repetition compulsion, will be the resultant of being trans-invested or invested with libido.

Keywords : death instinct; sexual instinct; repetition compulsion; investment.
