SOUZA, Rodolfo Coelho de. Music, sublimation and language of the unconscious. Rev. bras. psicanál [online]. 2011, vol.45, n.1, pp. 106-121. ISSN 0486-641X.

This paper proposes the hypothesis that certain assumptions of the language of the unconscious condition the occurrence of Freudian sublimation. Using Peirce's semiotic theory, the author revisits the problem of the unconscious sign operations, reframing Lacan's proposition of the “unconscious structured as language”. It proposes a correlation between the dream process and musical language and, in doing so, recognizes a functional identity between Freud's and Peirce's theories of the signs. Finally, the paper establishes a relation between the case study of a dream and the analysis of three musical pieces which exemplify unconscious linguistic operations that facilitate the sublimation process.
