The author begins the text by counterclaiming the evolution of the concept of the unconscious in psychoanalytic theory, pointing out that there was a gradual expansion of Freudian metapsychology, specially with the contributions of Klein and Bion. He suggests that Bion's contributions inaugurate a theoretic model which caters for mentalized and non-mentalized zones in which the unconscious organizes itself in different ways. He ends by establishing an imaginary dialogue between four authors invited by the IPA to produce texts based on the theme of the unconscious.
