Abstract

FIORINI, Leticia Glocer. Rethinking the Oedipus Complex.Translated bySonia Scala Padalino. Rev. bras. psicanál [online]. 2014, vol.48, n.4, pp. 47-55. ISSN 0486-641X.

The author proposes that the interpretation of the Oedipus complex be made in light of the contemporary issues which influence the construction of subjectivity. To that end, she considers two starting points: (1) the changes in the female position in current societies, specially the Western ones; and (2) the greater visibility and acceptance of the different sexual and gender manifestations which diverge from traditional standards. She considers the following matters, among others, to be at stake: (a) the conceptions surrounding sexual difference; (b) the concepts of masculinity and femininity; (c) the phallic priority; (d) penis envy in the girl; (e) the notion of desire; (f) the maternal and paternal roles. The author analyses the importance of immersing oneself in the genealogy of these matters to reflect on the female position and on new relationship configurations. She approaches the concept of homosexuality and the fact that it is considered a form of perversion. She proposes the analysis of the blind spots and aporias of the Oedipus complex when considered the ultimate explanation of the construction of sexuated subjectivity, from the historicising of this narrative. She emphasises the signification of the notion of "castration" as incompleteness. She approaches the need to think of a broadened Oedipus complex, the complete Oedipus complex. In the same manner, she includes Deleuze's proposal of a transfamiliar, vacuolar Oedipus, which overcomes the nuclear family model. The proposal is to consider in a triadic way the variables at stake in the construction of subjectivity, going beyond the classic binarity.

Keywords : Oedipus complex; sexual difference; paternal role; child's desire; femininity/masculinity.
