The issue of gender difference is based, in many psychoanalytical theories, on supposed anatomical evidence. In this article, we wish to find out if the body actually gives testimony of gender assignment, whether masculine or feminine. The psychoanalytical concepts of sexuation and sexuality will be tackled, questioning how gender difference may stem from the visibility of bodies, what inscription of the symbolic order it allows and how it is designated and established by psychoanalytical theory. The aim is to ponder over the trajectory from the bodily to the sexuated dimension, and then to the sexual dimension, in order to examine whether anatomy really is a destiny. After exposing the political, social and historical context within which gender difference is always conceived, we shall browse through the multi-layered Freudian theory on the subject, and consider the proximity, as far as this category is concerned, between psychoanalysis and gender studies.

Keywords : psychoanalysis; gender difference; body; gender.
