Abstract

PORCHAT, Patricia. Transsexuality today: issues for the consideration of body and gender in psychoanalysis. Rev. bras. psicanál [online]. 2014, vol.48, n.4, pp. 115-124. ISSN 0486-641X.

This article proposes that the notion of transsexuality be discussed based on several aspects it entails. We intend to discuss the clinical listening which is influenced only by the pathological bias, without regarding the current situation in which transsexuality exists. We propose that transsexuality be understood as an umbrella term that houses different ways to express gender and with varying degrees of body intervention or modification. We approach the stiffness of the diagnostic criteria, the concept of gender, the early treatment of transsexuality, the influence of the media and theories about the origin of transsexuality. We also highlight the psychic pain imposed by the field of health care which establishes ideal patterns of coherence between sex and gender. Listening to each transsexual persons uniqueness without discarding the sex reassignment surgery as a possible solution seems to be the most appropriate approach to psychoanalytic work.

Keywords : transsexuality; gender; body; body image; gender identity.
